I am five chapters away from finishing my May 2014 mystery, "Catnapped!" It’s due in New York October first. My thirteenth Dead-end Job mystery is set in the intriguing world of cat shows and pet custody.
Right now, I’m in the final days. My home looks like someone threw a frat party in the living room. I crave ice cream and almond cookies. I should be obsessed with finishing. But this is the stage of the book where I am fatally distracted.
Last novel, when I was down to the wire, I cleaned odd, unreachable places in our condo, including the air vents in the fridge. I even gave the dishwasher a vinegar bath and scrubbed the edge seals.
This time, I’ve resisted the call of kitchen cleaning. Instead, I’m seduced by the sirens of the Internet. It started when my friend Dick sent me the Dog Goldberg Machine.
Check out this dog food commercial. How did they do that? In one take or several?
I watched it so much, the final message "Play – it’s good for you" was seared into my brain.
That’s when Nancy, my dog loving friend, sent me the amazing video of Jesse the Jack Russell Terrier, a star born in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Except, I’m writing a book about cats. Where would the Internet be without porn and cat videos? You’ll have to dig up your own porn, but this is one of my favorite Funny Cat Videos.
That’s Part 3. This series has more parts than a cheap puzzle. I watched cat videos until my friend Kris introduced me to Simon’s Cat, a fat fur ball who stars in an incredibly accurate cat cartoon.
Simon’s Cat has its own YouTube channel, and I’d still be there if I hadn’t stumbled over the photo gallery. Anything to keep from tackling Chapter 29.
I can keep this up all day, but I really have to finish "Catnapped!"
What’s your favorite Internet distraction? No, wait, don’t tell me. I don’t want to know. Not until Oct. 2. Wish me luck.
