Margaret Turkevich

the Vera episodes based on the books by Ann Cleeves and "The Fall" with Gillian Anderson, both BBC productions available on DVD.

So great to see Stephanie here today. I just finished Idyll Threats over the weekend and I loved it. Look for a review on BOLO Books soon.

As for crime fiction TV, it just continues to get stronger. I love all the shows mentioned along with Vera, Rizolli and Isles, Broadchurch (season one, at least).

One show I would recommend is the Netflix original Sense8. It has a sci-fi premise, but there is some crime elements involved and the female characters are great. It just got picked up for season two, so I can't wait to see where this story will go.

A great list, including a couple I'd not known about, thanks! I've been gravitating more and more towards woman-centric fiction, music, and movies/TV over the last few years, so the suggestions are doubly appreciated.

Another incredible series was the New Zealand-produced "Top of the Lake", starring Elisabeth Moss and featuring a nearly unrecognizable Holly Hunter. It's a psychological thriller, very moody, with a flawed detective (Moss) who specializes in cases where there are children. There is a child missing in what amounts to the backwoods community where Moss's character grew up, and when her investigation keeps getting thwarted by the child's own father, it makes her radar twinge even harder. I watched it on Netflix.

Well, I loved Cagney & Lacey eons ago. Now Happy Valley and Bletchley Circle, and of course Helen Mirren's Jane Tennison. And it looks like I will need to check out more of what's on Netflix. Certainly better offerings now than Mrs. Columbo!

Margaret, I LOVE The Fall. Even with Gillian Andersons accent. Really really riveting. Are there going to be more seasons?

Kristpher, Sense8--looking for it instantly.

And we've never watched Vera, I am bemused to say. But now we get to stat!

Hank Phillippi Ryan

Karen, I'd heard of Top of the LAke,,and I honk we started to watch it..but there was something..hmm. But if you like it, I'll like it, I know that, so I'll look again.

Hank Phillippi Ryan

Sally, Mrs. Columbo! DId we imagine that, or was it a real show?

Karen in Ohio

Hank, Top of the Lake is hard to watch because of the violence; that might be what put you off. But Elisabeth Moss was riveting. She would have gotten an Emmy if it had been an American production, I'm sure. Also, the NZ scenery is incredible.

Sally Schmidt

Oh yes, it was a show. I wonder if Kate Mulgrew puts it at the top of her body of work list. But come to think of it, she was amazing - cleaned up after messy Lt. Columbo, baked, sewed costumes for her daughter, led the brownie troop, wrote a column for the local paper, and solved a murder in a couple of hours. ;-)

Stephanie Gayle

I looked up Mrs. Columbo. It was real. Egads!

The Fall is incredible, but I had to stop watching because Jamie Dornan's character gave me waking nightmares. He was just too good at being evil.

Hank Phillippi Ryan

I agree! (Though I didn't stop watching..) ANd it was SO strange that he was also supposed to be charming and handsome in 50 Shades.

Hank Phillippi Ryan

I think we should all watch Mrs. Columbo again. Right?

Stephanie Gayle

I had problems with Top of the Lake. Though the cinematography was gorgeous and the premise was interesting I had problems with the idea they'd let an outside cop run with this case outside her country's jurisdiction. And the ending--hmmmm. But many, many people loved it. And it was directed/created by and stars a woman! So maybe give it a go.

Karen in Ohio

Stephanie, I'm confused. My understanding was that Moss's character was a New Zealand native (EM worked very hard on her accent for the role), and that she was a New Zealand cop who floated because of her specialty. The action took place in New Zealand, so how was this outside her country's jurisdiction?

Am I missing something important? (Always possible!)

Kelly

Love your recommendation of The Killing. Also, come on! The Fall, Stephanie! The Fall! You can do it! :)

Stephanie Gayle

Hi Karen,
I thought Moss was a NZ native in the show. But her detective work was based in Sydney, Australia. So they let an Aussie cop work an NZ case? That's the impression I and many viewers were under.

Stephanie Gayle

Kelly, are you willing to answer my 2 am post-nightmare calls if I watch The Fall?

Karen in Ohio

Thanks, Stephanie.

Apparently, there's a second season coming. This time Moss's character is investigating in Hong Kong, and the show is being shot in Sydney.

Emily Ross

The Killing is my all time favorite, but you got that. Also Top of the Lake with Elizabeth Moss. And don't forget Veronica Mars - teen detective extraordinaire.

Hank Phillippi Ryan

******And the winner is: Karen in Ohio! Email me at h ryan at whdh dot com with your address. ****

And yes, I must say, The Killing surprised me! I thought of all kinds of possible solutions, none of which was the right one!

Hank Phillippi Ryan

Hi EMily! Do you know--I've never seen that show? So strange! Do you think I'd still like it?

And thank you so much, Stephanie! A great day at the Femmes!

Stephanie Gayle

Veronica Mars! How could I forget?
