What a great idea, Kris. There are three indy bookstores near me, so that's easy. Have you heard about Groupon? It was started to boost sales for local businesses nationwide also.

This is a terrific idea, Kris. Supporting local book stores helps authors as well as store owners.
A friend at a bookstore here in Fort Lauderdale spent thirty minutes on the phone with a committee chair, helping the woman line up a local author for her luncheon. "How many books would you like to order for the event?" my friend asked.
"None. I can get them cheaper on Amazon," the chair said.
But Amazon wouldn't have spent half an hour on the phone telling her which of their authors were good speakers.

Elaine, sadly, things like that happen all the time. When we close signings and ask them to buy books, we like to remind people that Amazon never hosted an author event. You're right, without local stores it would be much tougher for authors to reach readers.

Local bookstores are about readers having choices. The big box stores are about limiting those choices to 50 or so titles at a time. Amazon is about creating a new world of choices in which you can have any book you want as long as it's an e-book. Want proof? Go visit your local record/cd/music store. Oh, what's that, you can't find one?

Kris: Would that I lived in or near Sedona, I'd be at your bookshop often.
My three shops:
~Can't think of the name of this shop, but I call it the treasure shop/post office. It's the best place for finding just the right card or gift all while you are waiting to mail a package. Georgia is the coolest, as is Alisha, her helper.
~Gunbarrel Deli, an indi sub shop...O..M..G! such fab sammies.
We are there once a week.
~High Crimes Mystery Bookshop...Cynthia had to close her doors in Boulder, but she still has her shop online. I have two monthly subscriptions for a suspense or thriller, one is for my sister and one is for my dad. And I have a monthly order of 5-6 mysteries....

Good for you, Vickie! I'm glad you're supporting your indies. I was so sorry when I learned, well after the fact, that Cynthia closed her store. I signed there once and thought it was a great bookstore.

What a great idea! We've just moved to a small town specifically for the community aspect of life, and dedicated ourselves to supporting local businesses. I'll pass this on to like-minded individuals.

My husband and I follow this philosophy, and we shop in a local wine and herb shop on main street, patronize a local winery for entertaining out of town guests, or just a night out once a month for us, and I tend to shop at local yarn shops for my knitting/crocheting supplies (unfortunately, many of my other needlework needs have to be met online because there are NO local shops available to patronize). It's harder to do, living in a very small town, but we do our best to keep local enterprises thriving. These include the local restaurants and diners as opposed to the brand name ones that abound a few towns over. I appreciate businesses that know what they are selling, believe in their products, and provide good service. They deserve to stay in business, even in these tough economic times!

What a wonderful program. I am a heartfelt (and frequent shopping) fan of my local businesses, but it can never hurt to reallocate more of my budget to local folks rather than mail-order or corporate spending. Thanks for the reminder.
