I get to put my suitcase in the closet for four whole weeks! This is incredibly exciting to me. I’ve had fifty pages of my book to write for all those weeks. Just fifty pages between me and the end. But I don’t get into working on the road very well, unlike some of my peers. Apparently, they could knock off a few thousand words on the deck of the Titanic and send it to their editors before the ship went under. I am not made of that stern stuff.
That’s not to say I’ll be idle while working on completing NIGHT SHIFT. Our grandson is turning three! And our middle son will be 28. Both those facts seem amazing to me. (My own age is always a shocker, too.) I have to pay quarterly taxes and go to a doctor’s appointment. The usual round.
But every Thursday I’ll get twitchy and wonder if all the laundry is done so I can pack. This will last a good two or three weeks, before my whole brain realizes I’m home. Just about then, I’ll have to think about ThrillerFest in NYC.
I’ve seen Femmes Dana Cameron, Toni L.P. Kelner AND Leigh Perry, Donna Andrews, Catriona McPherson, Hank Phillippi Ryan, and Marcia Talley along the way, though I didn’t get in near enough visiting with them. I may have seen Elaine Viets, but frankly, at this stage of the long haul, maybe I only HOPED I saw her.
This past weekend I have been at the California Writers Conference, sharing my writing wisdom. I feel woefully short of writing advice, but I hope I found something to share with the budding writers attending the conference that won’t bore the established writers to tears.
Now I’m going to crawl back into my shell . . . and write fifty pages.
Charlaine Harris
Charlaine,
Thank you for sharing your wisdom and your advice at the California Crime Writers Conference. I particularly enjoyed what you and Joshua Bilmes had to say about selling novels to Hollywood. I hope you soon get your wish to have one of your novels turned into a movie.

From your keyboard to God's ears, John. I had a wonderful time at the conference, and the panels were informative and entertaining.
