Your mom was right. I've had bald cardinals show up at my feeders, usually in the fall. I don't know if it was a normal molt or reflected an infestation or illness. They do look sad

There's a great book on the swamps in the US--the only place in the world where such habitats occur--by John Dennis, called Great Cypress Swamps. My husband took all the photos (and I'm in one of two, unrecognizable). They spent quite a bit of time in the Great Dismal, so you might be interested in the book, if you can still find it.
